Product: Woven products and Tais
While many groups engage in the production of woven products, the Palameira Maubara group stands out for their exceptional use of tais in combination with their creations. Recognizing the intrinsic beauty and cultural significance of tais, which has been acknowledged by UNESCO as part of Timor-Leste’s heritage, they weave a tapestry of artistry that captivates the senses.
The Palameira Maubara group crafts a diverse array of products that showcase the harmonious fusion of woven materials and tais fabric. From exquisite earrings to tais wallets, bags, hair clips, bracelets, necklaces, key rings, dolls, and more, their collection is a testament to their creativity and reverence for tradition.
Creating these masterpieces requires meticulous attention to detail and a labor-intensive process. The artisans first weave the foundational product with care and precision, ensuring its flawless construction. They then embark on the intricate task of selecting the perfect tais fabric, cutting and skillfully sewing it using sewing machines. This combination of techniques harmoniously brings forth unique, eye-catching pieces that celebrate the cultural heritage of Timor-Leste.
As the Palameira Maubara group continues to weave their remarkable creations, they invite others to embrace the beauty of tais and the weaving arts. Through their efforts, they preserve the cultural heritage of their nation, empower local artisans, and inspire a sense of pride and admiration for the timeless beauty of Timorese traditions.
Group Profile
Founded in 2016, the Palameira Maubara Group was created as a tool of self-empowerment and economic sustenance for the women of Maubara. Prior to its establishment, these women had collaborated with the Portuguese Cooperation, who provided support for their economic activities. However, when the Portuguese Cooperation concluded their work in Maubara, Maria Eujenia, driven by the desire to create self-employment opportunities, took the initiative to form the Palameira Maubara group.
With their families’ well-being in mind, the group embarked on a journey to generate income that would meet the needs of their households and enable them to support their children’s education. Through their shared vision and determination, they sought to create a sustainable livelihood by tapping into their innate creativity and crafting exceptional products.
The Palameira Maubara group is not content with solely catering to local markets; they aspire to showcase their craftsmanship on an international stage. By promoting their unique creations beyond their country’s borders, they aim to garner recognition and appreciation for their skills and cultural heritage. Through their products, they invite the world to experience the beauty and artistry that stems from Maubara.
Driven by their passion for creativity, the Palameira Maubara group embodies the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of Timorese women. They endeavor to explore new avenues and opportunities, expanding their horizons and reaching audiences far and wide. With each meticulously crafted item, they leave an indelible mark, capturing the essence of their culture and igniting curiosity about the rich traditions of Maubara.
