About

Product: Woven products
Suco Makili in Atauro is rich in a variety of traditions and one of them is a woven product from palm leaves. It comes from the old times. The woven products are often used for day-to-day activities such as the boxes to place small items, the baskets to place the produce / food from agricultural activities such as corn and so on. Although women in Makili are independent in doing these activities, they also need their husbands to help getting the palm leaves from the fields. To weave it is only necessary a knife and some wire. To differentiate between the Makili products and products from other places, the Makili groups use the coffee colour (brown) to create that identity.
Group Profile
The Homan Furak group is a female group created in the suco of Makili, Atauro in 2017 by Ms. Rebeca Baptista. Now, the group is composed of 11 members who have the skills to weave local products such as baskets, rice baskets, bags, place mats, pencil case, camera bags, and also hats.
The women meet once a month to organise work and make group production as well as individual production in their centre in Makili waiting for people to visit and buy their products and sometimes they take them to sell in Beloi or in Dili. They are also very active in making publications on social media Facebook.
The women gathered together to do weaving activities because they want to help their husbands get money for their families and pay for their children’s school.
The village of Makili is located in the eastern part of Atauro and can be accessed by local boat or by walking through the beach.
This group is led by Rebeca Baptista, head of the Group (+ 670 7530 5080), Catarina Baptista, Secretary (+ 670 7671 8057) and Josefa de Araujo, Treasurer.
