About

Product: Tais
Tais holds immense importance in Timorese culture as it embodies the nation's identity, history, and social values. It is not just a fabric, but a symbol of unity and Timorese pride. Tais weavings often depict traditional motifs and patterns that convey stories, beliefs, and ancestral wisdom, preserving the cultural heritage of the Timorese people. It plays a significant role in ceremonies, rituals, and traditional attire, showcasing the diversity and richness of Timorese customs.
Moreover, Tais serves as a source of empowerment for women, as they are the primary weavers, passing down their skills and knowledge from one generation to another. Through Tais, Timor-Leste celebrates its cultural roots, strengthens community bonds, and honors its vibrant heritage.
Group Profile
The Bobometo Group was established in 2002 by Marta da Costa (60) with the dream of promoting tais as Timorese identity and wealth as well as helping other women to generate income for their families.
The group is well known for their beautiful tais. They weave beautifull pieces embodding the knowledge of generations of family members.
Currently, Marta is the leader of the Bobometo group, that is composed of 17 women weavers from Atsabe, Bobonaro and Oe-Cusse. The women meet each day to organise work and weave the tais previously ordered by their clients and their own creative tais that they later take to sell on local markets and handicraft fairs.
The Bobometo group is located in the center of Dili in Aldeia Metin 4, Suco Bebonuk, Dom Aleixo administrative post, Dili and can be contacted through 7728 8864 / 7745 9465.
