Group Profile
Elvira Madeira Goncalves established the Moris Hakmatek Group in 2002 with the aim of continuing the tradition of their parents because their parents in the past knew about farming, livestock and weaving. The women in the group learned to weave from their mothers when they were young and continued to weave baskets up until this day.
The Moris Hakmatek group has 10 members (all women) with 5 of them being youth, and the group’s dream is to have a better place for production and sales in the future.
In 2002, Elvira Madeira Goncalves embarked on a journey to honor the rich legacy of her parents by establishing the Moris Hakmatek Group. Rooted in the wisdom passed down from generations past, their tradition encompasses not only the art of weaving but also the profound knowledge of farming and livestock. Inspired by the depth of their parents’ expertise, the women of the group embraced the craft of weaving, an age-old practice that has woven its way through their lives.
From a tender age, these women learned the intricate art of weaving from their mothers, absorbing the delicate techniques and time-honored methods that have been cherished within their families for years. Guided by the steady hands and patient guidance of their matriarchs, they developed a profound appreciation for the meticulous process of creating baskets—an art they have continued to nurture to this very day.
Within the Moris Hakmatek Group, a sisterhood of 10 women has flourished, their collective passion and dedication forming the heart of the community. Amongst them, five vibrant youths bring a fresh perspective and an eagerness to carry the torch of tradition into the future. United by a shared vision, the group aspires to create a brighter future—one where they can expand their reach and impact, providing a haven for their craft and a space where their creations can find appreciation far and wide.
Yet, their dreams extend beyond the confines of their present circumstances. They yearn for a future that holds a better place for production and sales, one that allows their artistry to thrive and their heritage to be celebrated.
